Every P4 head-coach change, every material contract adjustment, and every buyout paid — tracked as the market moves.
This reference answers a different question from the Coach Compensation & Buyout Tracker. The Tracker answers who makes what and what is their buyout. This reference answers what moved this year — who is out, who is in, who got paid, and what does it mean for the market. Two ledgers, one panel of practitioner concepts, and one aggregate carousel-cost tally. Sourced from state open-records disclosures, board minutes, university news-office announcements, USA Today's coach-salary database, Sportico and On3 contract-detail reporting, and contemporaneous trade-press coverage from ESPN, CBS Sports, The Athletic, and university-released contract-terms documents. Figures reflect reported and as-of-publication estimates. Where a contract term is not disclosed under open-records law — private universities, negotiated exemptions, or terms still in flux — we mark it "reported" or "est." rather than assert precision the source cannot support.
The Coach Compensation & Buyout Tracker is a stock reference: at any point in time, it shows who makes what, on what term, with what buyout schedule at forward reference dates. It answers a static question well.
This reference is a flow reference: it tracks the movement itself. Every P4 head-coach separation since May 2025, whether by termination without cause, termination with cause, retirement, or hired-away. Every material contract extension or raise. Every buyout paid or forgiven. Aggregate cost to the P4 of the year's carousel. And the concise market-view summary that reads across those movements to explain how the top of the coaching market repriced this cycle.
For the practitioner reading the athletic department balance sheet, the flow question is often the more consequential one. A program on the Tracker at $50M mid-contract buyout does not move the balance sheet in the reporting year. A program that fires that coach and takes the $50M charge does. This reference is where those transactions live.
For the reader tracking the coaching-comp market from the outside, this reference is where the moves are visible in one place: the seventeen-plus head-coach changes since May 2025 (the largest single-cycle carousel of the SEC-Big-Ten consolidation era), the eight-plus material extensions repricing the top of the market, and the aggregate cost the P4 absorbed to reset its coaching bench. Ledger figures reflect reported and as-of-publication estimates; consult primary sources for authoritative terms.
Seventeen P4 programs turned over their head coach across the 2025-26 carousel. Fifteen were terminated without cause. Two were terminated with cause (Sherrone Moore at Michigan; Troy Taylor at Stanford). Two departures were retirements (Chris Klieman at Kansas State; Kyle Whittingham stepped down at Utah). Two additional programs (Iowa State, Ole Miss) turned over because the incumbent was hired away by another P4 program, with the buyout obligation shifting to the acquiring school. The distinction between clauses is the most consequential analytical fact of the cycle: the same "the coach was fired" story produces two entirely different capital-allocation outcomes depending on whether the with-cause or the without-cause clause was invoked.

Sortable and filterable inline. Buyout figures are Institute estimates from state open-records disclosures, contemporaneous trade-press reporting (Sportico, ESPN, CBS Sports, The Athletic, On3), and university-released contract-terms documents. Mid-cycle figures reflect the payout owed at mid-contract before offsets, mitigation, and negotiated modifications. Actual paid amounts may reflect delayed payment schedules and negotiated reductions. Consult primary sources for authoritative figures.
Eight material contract adjustments repriced the top of the P4 head-coach market during the 2025-26 window. The single largest analytical development of the cycle: the top of the coaching-comp market moved up approximately $1.0 to $1.5 million per year, driven by (a) Cignetti's market-review-clause reprice at Indiana after the January 2026 CFP National Championship, (b) DeBoer's April 2026 extension to $12.5M at Alabama, and (c) Lanning's six-year Oregon extension with a $20M coach-to-leave retention firewall. The Kirby Smart contract at Georgia sets the upper reference on the market at $13.28M annual. Extensions below are limited to material adjustments — small-scale escalators and bonus-schedule modifications are not itemized.
| Program | Coach | Extension date | New terms | Total value ($M) | Trigger | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Indiana | Curt Cignetti | Oct 16, 2025 (extension); Jan 2026 (market-review reprice) | 8-year term; repriced to $13.2M avg. from Oct 2025 $11.6M avg. within 120 days of CFP semifinal | $105.6 | Market Review Clause (CFP semifinal trigger; 120-day window) | IU Athletics |
| Georgia | Kirby Smart | 2024 (last reset; contract runs 2033) | 10-year term; $13.28M annual reported (incl. max $1.77M bonus schedule) | ~$130 | Retention at top of market post-2021/22 national championships | UGA Athletics |
| Colorado | Deion Sanders | March 2025 | 5-year extension through 2029; $10M base 2026; $10M coach-to-leave buyout | $54 | Performance-driven (post-2024 9-4 season) | CU Athletics |
| Oregon | Dan Lanning | 2025-26 window (6-year extension) | 6-year term through 2030; ~$11M annual; $20M coach-to-leave retention firewall | ~$66 | Retention firewall vs. NFL / top-college poaches | Oregon Athletics |
| Alabama | Kalen DeBoer | April 2026 | 7-year extension through 2033 at $12.5M annual; ~$2M raise from prior schedule | ~$87.5 | Retention post-Saban stabilization (2025 season) | Alabama Athletics |
| Ohio State | Ryan Day | February 2025 | 7-year extension through 2031 at $12.5M annual; max bonus $1.55M; $250K retention 2027 | ~$87.5 | Performance-driven (2024 CFP national championship) | OSU Athletics |
| Texas | Steve Sarkisian | Early 2025 (Board of Regents approval) | 1-year extension; $10.8M 2025 base with $250K annual escalators to ~$12.3M by 2031 | ~$76 | Performance-driven (back-to-back CFP semifinals) | Texas Athletics |
| Notre Dame | Marcus Freeman | July 2026 (2nd consecutive year enhancement) | 4-year extension; reported >$9M annual; private-university terms not filed source | Not disclosed | Retention (NFL interest incl. NY Giants; est. as of publication) | Notre Dame Athletics |
| Texas A&M | Mike Elko | November 2025 | 6-year extension; reported ~$11M+ annual after 11-2 CFP season | ~$66+ | Performance-driven (11-2 CFP appearance) | Texas A&M Athletics |
| Missouri | Eli Drinkwitz | November 2025 | 6-year extension; reported ~$10.25M annual | ~$61.5 | Retention post-SEC step-up performance | Mizzou Athletics |
Extensions above the material threshold only. Contract terms sourced from university news-office announcements, state open-records disclosures, Sportico contract-detail reporting, USA Today coach-salary database, and contemporaneous coverage from ESPN, CBS Sports, The Athletic, and On3. Aggregate values are reported / est. as of publication. Private-university terms (Notre Dame) are trade-press estimates rather than filed source.
Summing the fifteen without-cause terminations from the movement ledger produces the Institute's estimate of aggregate 2025-26 carousel cost: approximately $285 million in reported and estimated buyout obligations paid or accrued across P4 athletic departments and their booster foundations during the cycle. The number is a mid-range estimate; actual paid amounts reflect delayed payment schedules, offset provisions when the terminated coach takes another job, and negotiated modifications. The two with-cause terminations (Moore at Michigan; Taylor at Stanford) and the two retirements (Klieman at Kansas State; Whittingham at Utah) triggered zero separation payment.
Two mid-cycle terminations (Kelly at LSU in October; Franklin at Penn State in October) accounted for roughly $95-105M of the aggregate on their own — approximately one-third of the entire P4 cycle cost concentrated in two movements. Both drove downstream cascades: LSU pulled Kiffin from Ole Miss, forcing Ole Miss into a DC promotion; Penn State pulled Campbell from Iowa State, triggering the largest single-hire cascade of the cycle (three assistants and 23 players followed Campbell to Penn State).
Aggregate figure is the Institute's sum of the estimated ranges in the movement ledger. Ranges are used where filed source is not available; the midpoint is reported here. Consult state open-records releases and contemporaneous trade-press for authoritative per-case figures. All numbers reported / est. as of publication.
The top of the P4 head-coach market moved up materially between May 2025 and July 2026. The most important individual event of the cycle was Curt Cignetti's Market Review Clause firing at Indiana after the January 2026 CFP National Championship, which repriced him from an October 2025 $11.6M average to $13.2M average within 120 days — tying Kirby Smart at the top of the market. That single reprice pulled the entire top-3 cohort upward and set the reference number Boards will use to structure any new nine-figure extension.
Every practitioner-facing analytical concept on this reference is defined in full on the Coach Compensation & Buyout Tracker. Each concept below is summarized in one to two sentences with a link to the full defined-term panel. Together the four concepts form the modern contract-diligence checklist for any P4 head-coach commitment.
The condition in which a head-coach contract's without-cause termination cost, combined with the athletic department's revenue base and competing obligations, functionally forecloses termination as an available option regardless of on-field performance. Reference case: Mike Norvell / Florida State (estimated ~$58-70M buyout against ACC media distribution roughly half of SEC / Big Ten).
See the full defined-term panel →A contract provision that automatically triggers a comp adjustment upon a defined performance milestone (typically a CFP semifinal or national championship), forcing the school to raise the coach into a specified top comp cohort within a defined window (typically 90-120 days). Reference case: Curt Cignetti / Indiana (Oct 2025 extension; January 2026 championship-triggered reprice to $13.2M avg. within 120 days).
See the full defined-term panel →A dynamic where a program's viability is tied primarily to specific recruited stars rather than to sustainable program architecture. Revenue and on-field results tend to regress toward the pre-star baseline within one to two seasons of star departure. Reference case: Deion Sanders / Colorado (4-8 in 2023, 9-4 in 2024 with Hunter and Shedeur, 3-9 in 2025 after both departed for the NFL).
See the full defined-term panel →The outer bound on without-cause termination cost in college athletics. Texas A&M paid approximately $77 million to Jimbo Fisher on separation in November 2023 — the largest coach termination payment in the history of college athletics, and the reference number every P4 Board now implicitly models against on any fully-guaranteed head-coach commitment.
See the full defined-term panel →Every entry in the movement and extension ledgers above can be read against these four concepts. A without-cause termination that produces a mid-nine-figure buyout charge invites the Fisher-precedent read. A no-move retention despite regressed performance invites the Buyout Firewall read. A performance-driven mid-window reprice invites the Market Review Clause read. A comp-tier ratchet driven by transient star recruiting invites the Star-Anchored Coaching Value read.
