The connective tissue of American commercial finance from 1861 to 1913. Morgan financed Vanderbilt’s son’s railroad reorganizations, worked alongside Rockefeller in the Standard Oil ecosystem, purchased Carnegie Steel in the transaction that founded U.S. Steel, and personally organized the 1895 gold rescue and the 1907 Panic intervention that established the American lender-of-last-resort template. Read alongside the other four case studies for the fullest treatment of the 1861–1913 American commercial-finance ecosystem — Morgan was the operational center.
The Morgan case is the sixth entry in the Institute’s Historical Case series and functions as the connective tissue for the other five. Morgan was, throughout the 1871–1913 period, the banker who financed the industrial consolidations, orchestrated the industrial mega-transactions (General Electric 1892, International Harvester 1902, U.S. Steel 1901), and personally served as the pre-Federal-Reserve lender of last resort in the 1895 gold crisis and the 1907 Panic.
The unvarnished chapter is the Civil War trade — sections of Morgan’s early career involved war profiteering that his subsequent career and philanthropy do not erase. Every honest case has one. Morgan’s is 1861–1865, treated directly in Section 2.
